VODBOX Aficionado Reviews Exclusiv Vodka

By Monique Farah, VODBOX Beverly Hills

Exclusiv Vodka…A Uniquely Authentic Experience

When I first heard about Exclusiv Vodka, I have to be honest…I didn’t know what to think. My knowledge of Moldova was lacking to say the least, and although I work with over 80 different vodkas on a daily basis, I had never heard of Exclusiv. It was my good fortune that a bottle was sent to me. After reading about the complex history, and then experiencing the complex flavor profile, I was more then impressed. Although independent since 1991, Moldova was under Russian rule for almost 200 years. Already having such a rich history in vodka, the distillers definitely captured the best of traditional Russian vodka…with a little twist.
The winter wheat used in Exclusiv, is the softest of the various types of wheat commonly used. This lends to a more velvety yet clean finish. Although I find wheat vodkas to have a consistent, one note flavor, Exclusiv changed my preconception completely.
Alright, so here’s what you’re waiting for…how does it taste? I think the best way to describe it is that it has a slight sweetness on the top of your tongue with a dissipating spice that finishes in the back of your throat. The flavor fills up your whole mouth and then it rolls as it finishes. Surprisingly, I think most whiskey drinkers, would appreciate its dynamic flavor and earthy spice. It’s provocative and, as I have said before, deliciously complex. Tasting this vodka is like tasting a fine wine. How it starts and how it finishes are both surprising and sophisticated.
This vodka is definitely not for the amateur palette because it should be savored rather than just sipped. With such deep roots in Russian history, it is refreshingly authentic and rich. If you like over distilled, no bite and no flavor, this spirit is not for you. Distilled to perfection five times, there’s just enough character without the harsh aftertaste. Spirits Review of Exclusiv Vodka

Chris Carlson of Spirits Review tasted Exclusiv Vodka.

Appearance: Crystal clear, no sediment whatsoever. Limpid shining pool in the glass. On swirling, it leaves a thin clear coat on the inside of the glass with first droplets forming then long thin legs. Wonderful bright appearance.
First Impression: Alcohol and grain, plump, almost creamy, bread like and slightly herbal bouquet and no trace of off-notes, or the smell of rubbing alcohol that many other vodkas suffer from.
Taste: Plump, slightly oily body, with wheat bread notes glide past the tongue nipping at it with the alcohol edge with a slightly sweet, creamlike lingering finish. Nicely oily body but not too heavy. Overall rather smooth and a little spicy.

Exclusiv Vodka Impresses Beverage Underground

Beverage Underground sampled Exclusiv Vodka and here is some of what they had to say:
"We have discovered a gem of a vodka that shines bright both in the the glass and at the bottom line without sacrificing quality, image or smoothness. Exclusiv Vodka may just be the best new ‘total package’ product for both on and off premise retailers and their staffs. This clean vodka with deep Russian roots has been available in the US since 2006 in limited supply and as 2010 comes to and end, this soft and silky distillate from Moldova is emerging as one of the best leaked secrets of sprits industry professionals. Grassroots efforts, and ‘buzz’ from bartender and martini drinkers along with a product that delivers in every situation, Exclusiv Vodka is receiving more consumer curiosity and industry approval."

Vodka Reviews from Examiner.com

Review of Exclusiv Vodka originally posted on Examiner.com by Nate Knox
I received arguably the best package a person could receive in the mail about a week ago, a bottle of vodka. Biting down the urge to post a snap review, I started making drinks. How can a writer give an honest review of anything without allowing proper time for multiple testings? That's certainly not fair when is comes to the spirits industry and some very kind PR outreach.
So, in case you couldn't guess, I made a bunch of drinks with the product... Exclusiv Vodka.
Exclusiv evokes images of icy mountain peaks and crystal clear streams. It brings to mind expressions like clean, fresh and crisp. The best and truest description we can offer is… Perfect.
Taste it.
We believe you’ll agree.
They said I would agree, and though I was skeptical, I did.

First Impressions
Unlike MANY spirits, Exclusiv is very simplistic in presenting itself visually. The vodka comes in a one-liter foggy-glassed bottle with a rich blue accenting the black print. Instead of a gaudy logo or large, ridiculous lettering, there is a simple polar bear on the bottle (and cap) that you only notice up close. The only art to Exclusiv's name is a blue swish. It's nice looking. A funny thing to appreciate is the cap. Made of sturdy plastic, it is easy to open and close. Say what you will about that, but I'm regularly annoyed with lids.
The smell is rich, crisp and you might even say oily. You can almost taste the wheat when you smell it, and you don't get the over-powering sense of rubbing alcohol like you do with most vodkas; there is a scent of it (it IS vodka), but it's not distasteful.
The first sip is better than its smell. If you smell if before taking a drink, you'll really know what to expect in its taste. It's rich and almost too smooth. Exclusiv has a spice to it that I really love.
Exclusiv tastes great alone and on the rocks, in simple Juice/Sprite drinks, and in more complex cocktails. I've had the pleasure of testing a handful of drinks over the past week or so and I'd like to share them with you.

DRINKS! DRINKS! DRINKS!
Of course I tried the simple: Exclusiv & Sprite. Sprite alone is not a great drink and it doesn't mask vodkas all that well in my opinion (like juice does), but I had no qualms with it. The Exclusiv was very evident in the drink, but not in a "I'm not mixed enough to enjoy" sort of way. The Exclusiv added a nice rich taste.
Moving on...
I was on the hunt for a drink that was a step up from just Sprite, but not on par with a heavy, involved cocktail. So I turned to my friend from Twitter, @MrMixologist. MrMix regularly makes/creates some really great drinks and gets a lot of attention on Twitter and elsewhere. He had the opportunity to try Exclusiv as well and he made this drink:

The "Exclusive Ass" (play on the mule)
  • 1 freshly squeezed Lime
  • 2oz Exclusiv Vodka
  • Dash of Angostura Bitters
  • Regatta Ginger Beer

Build in a Collins glass, the freshly squeezed lime, add the Vodka, maybe 2 or 3 dashes of the Bitters, then Ice and Top with Ginger Beer. Garnish with the leftover lime.
I used to last bit of Ginger Beer that I had, so I only had one drink...but...I loved it. After I go out and restock my bar, I'm going to make many more of these.

Then, to step it up some, I tried the Spiced Pear and the Citrus-Cranberry Punch.
Citrus-Cranberry Punch
  • 1 oz Exclusiv Citrus Vodka
  • 1/2 oz Limoncello
  • 1 oz cranberry juice

Fill with Ginger Ale Serve in a champagne flute or punch bowl
Spiced Pear
  • 2 oz Exclusiv Vodka
  • 1 oz Baileys
  • 1/2 oz pear puree
  • 1/4 oz cinnamon schnapps
  • dash of honey

Add ingredients to a martini shaker shake and pour in a martini glass with a sugar/cinnamon rim. Personally, I prefer a sugarcoated rim.

This was really good! Find Exclusiv as soon as you can and make this drink. STAT!
Final Thoughts It looks like a bottle sells for around $16, which was about 8 dollars LESS than I expected it to be. With its great taste and low cost, no wonder it was voted a Best Buy. Now I'm no professional who can give vodkas ratings, but I personally would give it a 94, which is 3 point higher than what it actually got (I think it was a 91). As for a personal score, I'd give it a 4 out of 5 stars. It's great, but I think something has to be REALLY stunning to earn a 5.
While it looks like they've been around for a few years, they're really making a big PR push to gain more attention and notoriety. Let me say this, it's doing them good. While it's only sold in New York, according to their website, they're gaining national attention. I hope they can begin branching out into other areas, like St. Paul and the surrounding Twin Cities. Once they get in Minnesota, they'll skyrocket in word-of-mouth inloveness around here. You know we love our booze here.
